Digital transformation is more than digitizing old processes—it’s about fundamentally rethinking how your business operates. From digital twins to real-time data insights, digital transformation unlocks new levels of efficiency and innovation.
What Is Digital Transformation?
If you haven’t done it yet, you should definitely have a read at one of my favorite articles titled “The democratization of digital delivery” to understand better the scenario. Assuming you are now up to speed with the subject, let’s quickly recap:
While the need to speed up digital delivery is well grounded in notably future-looking departments like Marketing and E-commerce, the recent pandemic has definitely increased the need for innovative solutions and accelerated the digital transformation process of areas that have always been less driven by technology – think of how Virtual Showrooms have impacted Wholesale, Merchandising and Operations in the fashion industry.
In such a scenario it becomes almost inevitable that business functions take charge of gathering insights/requirements and proactively look out for solutions/partners to solve the newly risen challenges. Unfortunately most of the times resources are overwhelmed by operativity and lack the necessary headspace to productively seek, manage and deploy new solutions. The Innovation and Digital Transformation (IDT) function is intended to fill that gap, promoting change, collecting challenges/insights and sponsoring new ideas in close collaboration with other business functions. Digital transformation involves integrating digital technologies into all areas of a business, resulting in significant improvements in operations and customer experiences. It’s not just a tech upgrade—it’s a cultural shift.

Why Does It Matter?
Organizations that embrace digital transformation outperform their peers in profitability, customer satisfaction, and innovation.
Key Benefits:
- Operational Efficiency: Automation and real-time data reduce costs and errors.
- Enhanced Customer Experiences: Personalized interactions boost satisfaction.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Access to real-time insights leads to better business outcomes.
Example Use Case:
Aligning processes, technology, and culture with evolving market demands is at the heart of digital transformation. Our services focus on optimizing operations, integrating next-generation technologies, and fostering adaptability within organizations. Here are three pivotal projects that exemplify this transformational approach:
1. RFID Integration for Digital Product Passport and Traceability
At Giorgio Armani, from January 2022 to August 2024, I led the implementation of RFID technology into our product care labels. This initiative provided multiple benefits across various departments:
- Logistics: We achieved real-time monitoring of production progress, allowing for more accurate forecasting and timely interventions.
- Retail: Inventory management processes were revolutionized, resulting in a 500% increase in efficiency. Store associates could conduct swift stock takes, ensuring product availability and enhancing the customer shopping experience.
- Customer Engagement: By scanning a QR code, customers could access detailed sustainability stories behind each product, fostering transparency and strengthening brand loyalty.
This project not only streamlined our supply chain but also aligned with the growing consumer demand for sustainability and traceability in fashion.
2. Virtual Prototyping Implementation
During my tenure at Giorgio Armani, I established a 3D prototyping department known as the “Virtual Factory.” The primary objectives and outcomes included:
- Accelerated Prototyping: By transitioning to 3D models, we reduced the prototyping process time by 80%. Designers could visualize and modify designs in a virtual environment, leading to faster decision-making.
- Augmented Reality (AR) Integration: Utilizing a combination of specialized software and devices like Oculus Quest and Apple Vision Pro, designers could approve collections in AR, enhancing precision and collaboration.
- Extended Applications: The 3D assets created were repurposed for various functions:
- Sales: Displayed in showrooms when physical samples were unavailable.
- Marketing: Used in photoshoots, eliminating the need for physical samples and reducing logistical costs.
- E-commerce: Integrated into online configurators, allowing customers to personalize products virtually.
This shift not only enhanced our operational efficiency but also contributed to sustainability by minimizing the need for physical samples.
3. Online Configurator for Made-to-Measure Services
In an effort to modernize the made-to-measure experience at Giorgio Armani, I introduced a virtual configurator with the following features:
- Customer Convenience: Clients could save their biometric and physical data, enabling them to reorder bespoke items without visiting the store for measurements.
- Precision and Satisfaction: This system increased order accuracy, resulting in a 50% reduction in returns.
- Enhanced Sales: The streamlined and user-friendly process encouraged repeat purchases, as clients appreciated the ease of reordering perfectly fitted garments.
By integrating this digital tool, we bridged the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, offering a personalized yet efficient customer experience.
These projects underscore my commitment to leveraging technology to drive innovation, efficiency, and customer satisfaction in the fashion industry.
